Rigoberta Menchu

Rigoberta Menchu was born Jan. 9, 1959 in a small Guatemalan town. She helped her family work on the farm most of her life. She was around adults most of the time and then became part of social reform activities.She focused on women's rights movements when she was still a teenager. During the time she was working on the movements her family was accused of many things and her father and brother were later killed. She had to hide in Guatemala and she eventually had to leave and go to Mexico. Even in Mexico she still fought for people's rights in Guatemala. She was a great woman and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992.
